Hull FC Backs 'Magic Table' Technology Investment

The Hollies, a care home for people living with dementia, owned and managed by the Hica Group, has launched a ‘magic table’ that will improve the lives of residents.

Supported by Hull FC, the new interactive Tovertafel system is sensory stimulating and provides a wide range of physical, emotional and social benefits, that greatly advance the wellbeing of residents.

The Hollies identified the need for the enhanced dementia care provision, making the commitment to invest in state-of-the-art healthcare technology that leads the way in improved wellbeing for care home residents in Hessle and the wider area.

Hull FC player Jordan Lane said: “To see the effects the ‘magic table’ has on residents is great. The club does a lot of work in the community with mental and physical health, and it’s great to see the progress being made here.”

First developed in the Netherlands and already in use in other parts of the UK, the Tovertafel comprises a portable box suspended from the ceiling projecting interactive sensory stimulating images on to any surface below.

Brian Johnson, Wellbeing and Activity Lead at the Hica Group, said: “The Tovertafel allows table top light games to be played to stimulate physical, mental and social activity, which is vital in the care of dementia especially in the mid to late stages of the condition.

“It’s wonderful to introduce it to one of our highly specialist dementia care homes because it will greatly help to improve our wellbeing programmes.”

Residents will be able to play a selection of stimulating games that feature animals, flowers and other everyday items such as balls on their own or under supervision.

Hessle Town’s Mayor, Phil Davison, said: “It’s wonderful to welcome such innovative resources to Hessle, knowing they’ll greatly benefit those receiving residential and dementia care.

“I’ve seen first hand how much residents interact, respond and are involved with the Tovertafel table and it’s great that the Hica Group has introduced this to its Hessle care home.

“Not only does it represent investment in dementia care, it also shows a commitment to care in the community, to help continuously improve standards of care.”

Playing light games also has a calming effect on residents, helping to relax them. At the same time, it’s beneficial for residents who can’t communicate well because it encourages them to come together with family members and friends and interact and have fun.

Managing Director at the Hica Group, Terry Peel, added: “The Hollies is our second care home in the Hull area to receive a Tovertafel system and it’s great to introduce such a useful and innovative tech health tool into the home.

“Wellbeing is at the heart of our ethos and I am confident the Tovertafel system will be a great success, enjoyed for years to come that will genuinely improve our care programmes.

“Today is a reflection of Hica’s commitment to investing in its group of care homes and continuing to provide the very best level of dementia care.”
