Award shortlisting for UCLan science festival team

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has been shortlisted for a prestigious award which celebrates excellence in education sector in the North.

Award shortlisting for UCLan science festival team

"The team works hard every year to deliver the Lancashire Science Festival through which we hope to inspire the next generation of scientists, by shining a light on the fun aspects of science"
Dr Jo Heaton-Marriott

The team from the Communications and Engagement Office, which organises the University’s annual Lancashire Science Festival, is in the running for the External Relations Team of the Year accolade at the 2017 Educate North awards.

The Lancashire Science festival is a free three-day event designed to engage the local community in a programme of activities, workshops and interactive demonstrations related to science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Led by Festival Director Dr Jo Heaton-Marriott, the award-winning event was first held in 2012, attracting up to 15,000 visitors a year since.

Primary and secondary schools and the general public are encouraged to attend workshops and activities as part of the event, which this year will take place at the University’s Preston City Campus between June 29 – July 1.

The Educate North Awards is delivered in association with The Telegraph, and recognises best practice and excellence in education in the region.

A judging panel comprising a range of leading industry professionals and experts will determine the winners, which will be announced at a ceremony on April 27 at the Hilton Deansgate, Manchester.

Dr Jo Heaton-Marriott, Acting Director of Communications and Engagement at UCLan, said: “The team works hard every year to deliver the Lancashire Science Festival through which we hope to inspire the next generation of scientists, by shining a light on the fun aspects of science – of which there are many!

“We’re proud to be able to put on the event for free and though we get great support for the event, we’re always looking for more sponsors and volunteers to come on-board and help us deliver a fantastic event for everyone to enjoy.”
